Brune (19) did volunteer work at a small primary school in Bocas del Toro - Panama. At this same school (and others) we also offer internships.
When Brune arrived in Bocas del Toro, she was immediately drawn in by the island’s charm the friendly people, nature and relaxed vibe. What started as a simple stay in Bocas del Toro, soon turned into something more meaningful.
“I immediately felt a great atmosphere,” she says. “It made me want to stay longer and contribute in some way.”
After discovering the volunteering options, Brune reached out to the team. With help from Ingrid, she chose to volunteer at a local school a perfect fit for her love of working with children and her dream of becoming a teacher one day.
Day at the school
Brune’s volunteer days start early, around 7:25 a.m. and are filled with variety. She helps teach English and French to children aged 4 to 17, joins in creative activities, and takes part in school excursions. “The kids are so curious and full of energy. We’ve done everything from baking with preschoolers to visiting another island to give chess and robotics lessons. The teachers are really kind and the students are just wonderful to be around. ”She loves the energy and community spirit from themed days like Animal Day and Baking Day to excursions around the islands. “Seeing the children’s excitement when they learn and use new English or French words is always a highlight.”

Meaning of volunteering
For Brune, volunteering has been a rewarding and eye-opening experience.
“I’ve learned new skills, gained confidence and discovered a lot about local life. The traditions, the sense of helping each other and the love for nature. It’s really special here.” She believes that volunteers and locals both learn from each other, bringing fresh ideas, energy and new perspectives.
Advice for future volunteers
Brune encourages anyone coming to Costa Rica or Panama, to give volunteering a try. “Come with an open mind and no expectations. Be ready for new adventures and learn from the local community. That’s what makes it so special.” Knowing some Spanish and being flexible definitely helps but more than anything, it’s about being curious and involved. Her three words to describe the experience? Fun, inspiring, and memorable.
